Step Back in Time: Exploring Hanbey, Tokyo’s Retro Izakaya Gem

Today, we’re stepping back in time as we visit Hanbey, a retro izakaya chain that transports you into the Showa era.

We visited their branch in busy Shinjuku. Hanbey is consistent with its theme of Japan during the 1950s, from the quirky décor to the food. There are lots of vintage toys, posters of Japanese films, and other nostalgic memorabilia. They also have lots of Japanese childhood snacks available for sale and as giveaways to their patrons.

Their menu also features old-school comfort food such as takoyaki, yakitori, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and retro-style alcohol and drinks and the best part is everything is so affordable. Most of the menu items are under JPY 500.

Whether you’re here to enjoy the food, the ambiance, or just relive memories of Japan’s Showa era, Hanbey is the perfect spot to get lost in nostalgia and good company.
