If you think you’ve arrived in Japan too early for the cherry blossom season, don’t lose hope! While the iconic Somei Yoshino variety typically blooms in late March to early April, there’s an alternative that welcomes visitors much earlier—the Kawazu Sakura.

Kawazu Sakura is an early-blooming variety of cherry blossoms that starts flowering as early as mid-February and remains in bloom until mid-March. These blossoms are known for their striking pink color, which is deeper and more vibrant compared to the pale pink petals of the Somei Yoshino.

During the first week of March last year, we had the opportunity to witness the beauty of Kawazu Sakura at the former Nakagawa Kawazu Park. The trees were already in full bloom, creating a pink canopy that stretched across the park. Unlike the Somei Yoshino blossoms, which last only about a week after peak bloom, Kawazu Sakura stays vibrant for a much longer period, allowing visitors enough time to enjoy its beauty.

One of the best things about Kawazu Sakura is that it lets you experience Japan’s cherry blossom magic without the overwhelming crowds of peak sakura season in April. Many travelers flock to Japan in spring, making popular hanami (flower-viewing) spots incredibly crowded. However, by planning a February or early March trip, you can enjoy cherry blossoms’ tranquil beauty in a more peaceful setting.
