Today, we’re taking a day trip from Tokyo to the historic and charming city of Kamakura. It’s a perfect getaway to explore temples, enjoy delicious food, and soak up some coastal vibes.
The first thing we did was pick up the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass. This convenient pass is a must-have if you’re planning to explore the area. It includes a round-trip ticket on the Odakyu Line and unlimited rides on the Enoden Line, a quaint railway that winds along Japan’s stunning coastline. The views from the train alone are worth the trip.
Our first stop is Komachi Street, a bustling hub of shops and eateries. We decided to grab an early lunch here and tried a bit of everything such as curry pan, daifuku, unagi and grilled seafood among others. One highlight was Shirasu, or fresh whitebait, which we had as a crispy croquette and as a flavorful topping on a seafood bowl. It really didn’t have much of a flavor and the texture of it when eaten raw was interesting.
We took a leisurely walk to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. This shrine is not just beautiful but also deeply spiritual, with its serene atmosphere and beautiful surroundings.
Next, we headed to the star attraction of Kamakura: the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in. This iconic bronze statue stands over 11 meters tall. We ventured inside the hollow interior of the statue, which was a unique experience that gave us a glimpse into the craftsmanship behind it.
Before wrapping up our day, we made a quick stop at the famous railroad crossing near Kamakurakokomae Station. If you’re an anime fan, you’ll recognize it from the opening scene of Slam Dunk. It can be a little bit chaotic here with many tourists trying to get a photo while the poor traffic enforcer is reminding them to keep off the road.
